§ 1235-13. Fire Protective Signaling Systems.

  • The owner of any business, mercantile or residential use building as defined by the 1989 edition of Cincinnati-Ohio Basic Building Code (COBBC), when such building has floors for human occupancy located more than 75 feet above the lowest level of fire department vehicle access, shall install and maintain in full operating condition by July 1, 1991, a fire protection signaling system conforming to Sections 1017.1, 1017.2, and 1017.4 through 1017.8 of the 1989 edition of the COBBC.

    For the purpose of this section, "fire protective signaling" shall mean an interior alarm system on a closed electrical circuit, composed of manual pull stations located in each story, not more than five feet (1524 mm) from each exit in each story, and audible alarm signaling devices so arranged that the operation of any one station will cause all such alarm devices to operate within the building in accordance with Section 1017.0 COBBC.

    Exceptions: the above provisions shall not apply:

    (A)

    To buildings of residential use which have in accordance with the 1989 edition of the COBBC all of the following:

    (1)

    Automatic smoke detectors located in conformance with Section 3781.104(A)(2)(b) ORC, other than those detectors for elevator recall;

    (2)

    Such detectors hardwired and interconnected to activate all alarm/signaling devices to be audible throughout the building by means of a manual alarm override switch in a constantly attended location; and

    (3)

    Such detectors supervised in accordance with Section 1020.2 COBBC.

    (B)

    To buildings equipped throughout with approved automatic fire detection systems other than smoke detectors for elevator recall when such detection systems are installed in accordance with Section 1018.0 COBBC; have a manual alarm override switch in a constantly attended location to activate all alarm signaling devices throughout the building, and have such detection systems supervised in accordance with Section 1020.2 COBBC.

    (C)

    Buildings conforming to Section 602.0 of the 1989 edition of the COBBC.

    (D)

    To buildings equipped throughout with approved automatic fire suppression systems when such systems are installed in accordance with Section 1004.0, 1007.0, 1008.0, 1009.0 or 1010.0 COBCC; activate alarm signaling devices audible throughout the building in accordance with Section 1017.7.2 COBBC; have a manual alarm override switch in a constantly attended location to activate all such alarm signaling devices throughout the building, and, when such systems are supervised in accordance with Section 1020.1(1), 1020.1(2) or 1020.1(3) COBBC.
