§ 1219-61. Shaftways.

  • (A)

    Except as provided in Section 1219-61(b) of this section, every door or window in a building used for manufacturing purposes or for storage, which opens directly onto any hoistway or other similar vertical means of communication between two or more floors in such building, shall be plainly marked with the word "Shaftway" in red letters not less than six inches high on a white background. Such a warning sign shall be placed as follows:

    (1)

    In the case of windows - so as to be easily discernible from the outside of the building;

    (2)

    In the case of doors - so as to be easily discernible to anyone approaching the shaftway from the interior of the building.

    (B)

    If the construction of the partition surrounding the shaftway is of such distinctive nature as to make its purpose evident at a glance, the warning sign shall not be required for doors opening onto a shaftway from the interior of the building.
