§ 1111-07. Temporary Covered Walks.

  • When in the opinion of the public agency having jurisdiction, a temporary covered walk is required, the following requirements shall apply:

    (1)

    The roof of such covered walk, for buildings up to two stories in height, shall be constructed of not less than one layer of two-inch nominal wood plank or equal, supported by well-braced framework and all parts of the roof structure shall be designed to support a live load of not less than 125 pounds per square foot. For buildings exceeding two stories in height, the roof of such walk shall be constructed of not less than two layers, staggered, of two-inch nominal wood plants or equal, supported by well braced framework, and all parts of the roof structure shall be designed to support a live load of not less than 250 pounds per square foot. Suitable material shall be placed between the layers of such roof to make it waterproof. Such roof construction shall be not less than eight feet clear above the walk and shall be of sufficient width to cover the entire temporary or permanent sidewalk.

    (2)

    All covered walks shall be not less than four feet wide in the clear. However, the agency having jurisdiction may require a walk of greater width.

    (3)

    A solid railing or footboard at least 30 inches high shall be constructed around the entire outer edge of the temporary covered walk. The side adjacent to the property line, between the sidewalk and roof shall be boarded up solidly.

    (4)

    If materials are stored or work is done on the roof of the covered walk, the street sides and ends of the roof shall be protected by a tight curb board not less than one foot high and a railing not less than 30 inches high.

    (5)

    The covered walk shall be adequately lighted between sunset and sunrise or as deemed necessary by the agency having jurisdiction.

    (6)

    Means of access shall be provided for the public from such temporary structure or covered walk to any bus stop. All necessary surface drainage shall be provided for when placing the sills or other parts of the structure.

    (7)

    No permit for the construction of any covered walkway shall be issued by the director of buildings and inspections until the applicant has obtained review and approval from the director of public works.
