§ 721-21. Roadway and Sidewalk Widths.

  • Where the roadway lines of a street have not been definitely marked by curbing, or have not been otherwise specially established by council, the parts allotted to roadway and sidewalk shall be determined as herein provided. The sidewalk spaces on each side shall be equal to each other. The city manager shall classify streets or parts of streets as major, secondary or minor, in accordance with traffic requirements. Roadway widths of such classes shall be as follows:

    (a)

    Major Highways.

    Total width, 80 feet or more, - roadway 60 feet.

    Total width, less than 80 feet, not less than 75 feet, - roadway 56 feet.

    Total width less than 75 feet, not less than 70 feet, - roadway 54 feet.

    Total width less than 70 feet, not less than 60 feet, - roadway 40 feet.

    Total width less than 60 feet, not less than 50 feet, - roadway 36 feet.

    (b)

    Secondary Streets.

    Total width not less than 66 feet, - roadway 40 feet.

    Total width less than 66 feet, not less than 60 feet, - roadway 36 feet.

    Total width less than 60 feet, not less than 50 feet, - roadway 34 feet.

    Total width less than 50 feet, not less than 40 feet, - roadway 27 feet.

    (c)

    Minor Streets.

    Total width not less than 40 feet, - roadway 24 feet.

    Total width less than 40 feet, not less than 30 feet, - roadway 20 feet.

    Total width less than 30 feet, not less than 25 feet, - roadway 18 feet.

    Total width less than 25 feet, not less than 20 feet, - roadway 16 feet.

    Total width less than 20 feet, not less than 15 feet, - roadway 10 feet.

    Total width less than 15 feet, not less than 10 feet, - roadway 8 feet.

    In the case of proposed streets in new subdivisions, the rules and regulations of the city planning commission shall apply.
