§ 506-84. Turning at Intersections.

  • Except as otherwise provided, the driver of a vehicle intending to turn at an intersection shall do so as follows:

    (a)

    Approach for a right hand turn and a right turn itself shall be made as close as practicable to the right hand curb or edge of the roadway.

    (b)

    Approach for a left turn from a two-way roadway into a two-way roadway shall be made in that portion of the right half of the roadway nearest the center line thereof and after entering the intersection the left turn shall be made so as to leave the intersection to the right of the center line of the roadway being entered.

    (c)

    Approach for a left turn from a two-way roadway to a one-way roadway shall be made in that portion of the right half of the roadway nearest the center line thereof and by passing to the right of such center line where it enters the intersection.

    (d)

    Approach for a left turn from a one-way to a two-way roadway shall be made as close as practicable to the left hand curb or edge of the roadway and after entering the intersection the left turn shall be made so as to leave the intersection to the right of the center lane of the roadway being entered.

    (e)

    Approach for a left turn from a one-way to a one-way roadway shall be made as close as practicable to the left hand curb or edge of the roadway. The completion of this turn is to be made in the extreme left hand lane lawfully available.

    (f)

    When a right turn roadway has been provided between the right hand curb or edge of the roadway and a channelizing island or marked area at an intersection, it shall constitute the only legal path for right turns and shall be used for no other purpose.

    (g)

    The operator of a vehicle within an intersection intending to turn to the left shall yield the right of way to any vehicle or bicycle approaching from the opposite direction.

    (h)

    When a motor vehicle and a bicycle are traveling in the same direction on any roadway, the operator of the motor vehicle overtaking such bicycle traveling on the right side of the roadway shall not turn to the right in front of the bicycle at that intersection or at any alley or driveway until such vehicle has overtaken and is safely clear of the bicycle.

    (i)

    Whenever, by reason of the location of a bus stop, it is necessary for the operator of a bus to proceed straight through in a lane marked for a compulsory turn or whenever the operator of any vehicle which because of its length or turning radius cannot comply with the foregoing, or who deviates from them as provided in Section 506-85, it shall be the duty of the operator to first ascertain that such movement can be made with safety and without interfering with traffic.
