§ 502-2. Emergency and Public Safety Vehicles, Regulation of.

Latest version.
  • The provisions of the traffic code regulating the movement, parking, and standing of vehicles shall not apply to an authorized emergency vehicle or public safety vehicle while the operator thereof is operating such vehicle in an emergency in the performance of official duties; provided, however, that the operator of such emergency vehicle or public safety vehicle, when driving against traffic on a one-way street, driving on the wrong side of the road, or otherwise disregarding a driving regulation, shall have the vehicle under full control.

The prima facie speed limitations set forth in Section 506-8 shall not apply to emergency vehicles or public safety vehicles when responding to emergency calls and the drivers thereof sound audible signals by bell, siren, or exhaust whistle. This provision shall not relieve the driver of an emergency vehicle or public safety vehicle from the duty to drive with due regard for the safety of all persons using the street or highway.

The driver of any emergency vehicle or public safety vehicle, when responding to an emergency call, upon approaching a red or stop signal or any stop sign, shall slow down as necessary for safety to traffic, but may proceed cautiously past such red or stop signal or sign with due regard for the safety of all persons using the street or highway.
