§ 407-159. Requirements for External Boarding Ramps.

  • For external boarding ramps in accessible vehicles, the following parameters apply:

    (a)

    The slope of an external boarding ramp must not exceed:

    (1)

    1 in 14 for unassisted access;

    (2)

    1 in 8 for unassisted access where the ramp length is less than 60 inches;

    (3)

    1 in 4 for assisted access.

    (b)

    Flooring must have anti-skid surface having a static coefficient of friction on wet and dry ramp surfaces not less than 0.5.

    (c)

    Ramp must operate in temperatures between -4 degrees Fahrenheit to 122 degrees Fahrenheit.

    (d)

    Ramp must include a white center stripe for wheelchair guidance.

    (e)

    Ramp must be secured by means other than a support or lug in the door while the vehicle is operated on a highway.
