§ 406-49. Vehicle Requirements.

  • Vehicles operated by all motor transportation companies shall:

    (a)

    Be kept and maintained in a safe and sanitary condition.

    (b)

    Be equipped with one outside rear-view mirror on both the left and right sides of the motor bus, windshield wiper, and partition, rail or other guard to keep passengers from standing to the left of driver.

    (c)

    Be equipped with a set of skid chains, which shall be applied to the rear wheels when necessary, except for dual-wheel buses.

    (d)

    Be equipped with an electric signal system for the use of passengers, to be used for the purpose of indicating a stop.

    (e)

    Be equipped with an exit door at the side and rear end thereof, or shall have a door on each side thereof, free and clear of any steering apparatus, or other obstruction. Such exit doors shall open outwardly toward the natural means of egress, and shall always be unlockable from within. But in case of left driver motor vehicles equipped with cross seats and unobstructed exit doors from each compartment on the right side, the seats will not be considered an obstruction, provided there is one exit door on left side in back of the driver's seat.

    (f)

    Be equipped with lights within the vehicle, so arranged as to light up the interior thereof, except that portion occupied by the driver, which lights shall be lit from dusk to dawn while the bus is in regular scheduled service on its route and at terminals.

    (g)

    Be properly heated in the winter time by means of a suitable and safe heating system.

    (h)

    Not carry or display any advertisement of any kind on the outside thereof, except such as may be approved by the director of public utilities, upon application therefor.

    (i)

    Have on the rear thereof an automatically operated light signal indicating when the motor bus is about to stop.
