§ 308-41. Personal Equipment for Police and Fire Recruits.

  • Every police recruit and fire recruit appointed on or after October 1, 1941, shall receive from the city, without cost, the first official uniforms, summer and winter, or allowance in cash substantially the equivalent of the cost thereof. Such police recruits and fire recruits shall further receive from the city, without cost to themselves, their original personal official equipment. Upon leaving the city service all such official equipment, including the first official uniforms, shall be returned to the city. All necessary rules and regulations governing police and fire force uniforms and equipment shall be made respectively by the chiefs of the police force and fire force, subject to approval by the director of safety.

    The purchasing agent shall, upon notice from the respective chiefs of the police force and fire force of the anticipated formation of new recruit classes, obtain information as to prices for police or fire force uniforms from qualified manufacturers and dealers equipped to provide the same, and shall furnish such information to the respective chiefs of the police force and fire force. On the basis of such prices, the purchasing agent shall, with the approval of the city manager, determine the cash allowance to be made to newly appointed police recruits and fire recruits for uniforms, which allowances shall be paid at or about the time that payment for any such uniform becomes due.
